7 Market Bleach
This indicates an ordinary bleach given to fabrics not intended for printing or dyeing. It is not so troublesome as a madder bleach. -
8 Madder Bleach
The most thorough bleach that cotton cloth receives. The process takes about four days and consists of several long boilings with alkalies and a final treatment with bleaching powder. It gives a full white and is generally used for goods to be printed. The usual procedure is as follows: - (1) Singeing to burn off all loose fibre. (2) Grey soaking, a simple steeping in water. (3) Lime boil, boiling in lime water for about ten hours under pressure, then washed in water. (4) Lime sour, a washing in cold acid solution of about 1 per cent strength. (5) and (6) Lye boilings in dilute solutions of caustic soda with resin soap for about ten hours. The sixth operation omits resin soap. (7) Chemicking, treatment in cold dilute solutions of bleaching powder, afterwards washing in water. (8) White sour, treatment in cold dilute acid solution as in No. 4. (9) Thorough washing in water and then drying. -
9 Sulphur Bleach
A bleaching process used mainly for animal fibres and jute. Sulphurous acid bleach is applied either as gas or liquid. The gas is produced by burning sulphur in the air which gives sulphurous acid gas fumes. The liquid is obtained by saturating water with this gas. The gas method is generally used. -
10 Grass Bleach (Grassing)
The oldest known method of bleaching, and still used for fine linen cloths. The method depends for its bleaching effect upon sunlight and the oxygen in the air. It requires a long time to get a good white.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Grass Bleach (Grassing)

11 Haarlem Fine Bleach
Fine linen fabrics during the 18th century were sent to Holland to be bleached. The softness and purity of the water of Haarlem Lake was renowned, and many large bleachworks were erected on its shores. The cloth was chemically treated and spread on a field to dry. The process required from six to eight months to complete.
